Baby Nail Clippers, AHHHHHH....?

I have baby nail clippers but I'm reluctant to use them..I'm sacred to cut the baby...I'd never forgive myself if I did, LOL.

I cut my 2month old nails with my teeth (wierd huh?) but effective. At least I can feel for his nail and skin and know exactly where to cut and he likes it and doesn't hurt him, LOL.

Really dont care if people think it's wierd or dumb I look at it like this..it's the same mommy instinct that mammals (tigers, cats, dogs) have when they carry their young in their mouth. It looks to us as if she's hurting her baby but she really isn't, LOL.

Any thoughts? THX

Baby Nail Clippers, AHHHHHH....?
Do what works, it's not weird. It's your baby.
Reply:gotta do it
Reply:Im the same, dont like using the clippers, too scary. Midwife said to bite em off so thats fine with me til shes bigger lol! :)
Reply:trust me you wont hurt em just cut to where the nail is a bit shorter then the tip of his finger
Reply:I know what you mean... I just pull the pad of their finger back and then cut them so that there is still a little white... then I don't feel like i can cut their skin. Biting the nails off works too if you are not worried that it would rip too short.
Reply:That was how I was going to answer your question. I used to use my teeth to cut my newborns nails.. Either that, or wait until she was sleeping.
Reply:Actually thats a pretty common thing to do. I couldn't cut my babies either with clipper when she was that small. I barely just started doing it and shes a year old. So no, your not weird.
Reply:I used them, cut my baby, cried and felt horrible, make my hubby bite or clip them now...
Reply:you need to buy some baby clippers because you don't know were that baby step or what it step in
Reply:well i don,t hert them but my baby don,t like it
Reply:It's actually common for mothers to bite their baby's nails, though I never did, but my mother and grandmother told me i should.

I was sooooo terrified to cut my son's nails after he was born. I kept those little mittens on him as much as possible to keep him from scratching himself until I got the nerve to cut them. I'm not going to lie, I did knick his fingertips a couple of times, but as long as you're really careful, or wait until your baby is distracted or asleep, you'll be ok.
Reply:my sister just had a baby, and she feels the same way about the baby nail clippers, and i have to admit, im pretty scared to use them myself. yeah, im scared to cut the baby, and so is my sister and her husband. my sisters pediatrician actually recommended, if she wasnt yet comfortable using the baby nail clippers, to bite off the nails, and it works effectively, and the baby is fine with it. so i think it works, and pediatricians recommend it so its a great way to cut your babies nails.
Reply:don't be scared. i cut my baby brother's nails with the baby nail clippers. it's a lot easier when they are asleep because they won't move that much.
Reply:It's better for baby if you use the clippers, I'd THINK. Everyone has their ways I suppose! That's kinda cool to know you do that. Thanks for sharing.

When I had a bunny I accidently cut it too far...so I see where you can be scared.
Reply:As long as you realize you may eventually cause a habit with him to chew his own nails (he'll become a nail-biter) I don't see anything wrong with it. I could never cut the baby's nails either. My sister-in-law did my first daughters all the time for me and my husband was in charge of our second!

Edit: You could also try using a nail file on his nails. It would probably just take a couple sweeps to pull off the sharp parts!
Reply:Baby nail clippers are quite small so it would be difficult to injure your baby. That said, if you are unsure, perhaps get someone who has used them before to show you how.

You won't be able to keep biting your baby's nails for much longer and besides, biting nails off will teach the child a bad habit as well as possibly leave a rough edge so the child could scratch itself.
Reply:well, you can use them but only cut the white part that you can see, biting them off can cause you to tear down further and hurt the baby more than clippers as long as they are good ones, try them on paper first to be sure they cut good, but if you try them on your nails you may dull them as yours are thicker
Reply:You are right in "cutting" your baby's nails with your teeth. It is the safest way to do it.
Reply:your mouth has a lot of germs you are better off just cutting the very top of the nail every 2 days but if you have been doing this method and it works keep doing it////////////
Reply:I never liked to use the clippers either. I always used my teeth. At a year old their nails are too tough and they are too wiggly. I suggest baby nail scissors. SOOO easy to cut their nails with. Almost impossible to cut them with. Also they have a blunt tip so they can't be injured. I LOVE THEM! Probably saved my life....and maybe my kids :-)

This is the link to the kit I got. The other crap in it kit like nail files and such....relatively pointless. These, however, were the only blunt tipped scissors I could find without going on some treasure hunt for them. Babies R Us probably has blunt tipped ones too!

Reply:i bite my son's nails as h nurses- hes almost 10 montsh and moves around wayyy too much to use clippers- also, my fiance tried cutting his nails using the clippers once and nicked my sons finger, he didnt cry but it couldd ahve been worse
Reply:using your teeth to cut your babies nails with your teeth is very normal. I know a lot of people who do it. I even know a mother who uses her mouth to suck out her daughters nose i think it is gross my self but to each their own. do what you feel gets the job done.
Reply:i know other mothers who also bit their babies nails. Problem is you can also tear the nail down to the quick. If you hold your babies hand like it was your own hand(nails facing away from you)It is much easier. Also snipping one side an then the other makes it easier. Hope this helps.
Reply:I was scared at first but once i did it, it was fine and i do it without a problem. You just have to not be nervous and do it in a good light!
Reply:what you are doing is fine- but i used lil emery boards- nail files....they worked well and i was never worried about doing it!!
Reply:you can bite them off with your teeth. be careful that is safer than the clippers.
Reply:My first baby was a month early and weighed only 4 pounds. The nurse told me to use my teeth to bite her nails b/c it would be too hard with her being that small to use the clippers.
Reply:I do the same thing. I get the nail clippers out with every intention of cutting them and end up biting them.
Reply:dont worry, you will get use to it, nail biting is a bad habit to have your child getting use to seeing you doing, try the clippers and soon it will be like your a pro i was the same way when i first had kids, now four kids later the only problem i have with cutting babies nails is trying to keep the baby still
Reply:Your baby will most likely get cut from you NOT cutting them. Those tiny nails can be razor sharp and the chance of YOU cutting the baby are slimmer than the baby cutting herself/himself with the nail on the face, or anywhere. Please cut them.
Reply:It is perfectly fine to chew your baby's finger nails.. %26amp; you can always do it, so he can't scratch himself.. When he's tiny like that, it is easy to do both, bite %26amp; clip.. but as he gets bigger you'll find it gets harder to do either.. just be careful.. it helps if you want to clip them, to do it after a bath.. but do what feels right for you.. =) It's very normal to bite his nails though.. Don't think you're weird, a lot of mothers do that.. =)
