Can I cut my cat's nails with the human nail cliper?

It's because his nails are too sharp and long that it tares off human skin and it hurts alot. Also, how could I make my 8 month old kitten behave? It's just that sometimes he attacks me for no reason at all with his claws and teeth. Then I get all these scars and scaps, which people gasp at them. Then, I spank him hard on the butt or hiss at him. But, I don't think that works, making him more violent(?).

Reply:NO! They make special nail clippers with pets. If you do it wrong you will cut them and they will bleed. My sister has leather furniture so she buys these plastic caps online that you can glue onto their nails every so often. This helps. use a water spray bottle to help with the bad behavior. Cats hate that. Some cats are just evil though.

Reply:I clip both of my cat's nails with regular nail clippers.. i get the really good ones (like revlon) that will cut them off clean..


but it's super hard to clip them with the others when they're young, because they squirm like hell and the clippers are so big and awkward.





it's probably going to take two people to do them for now anyway. My bengal is fine.. i can do hers no problem, my munchkin however.. not a chance.. and if i had cat ones.. there's no way they would be getting done.

Reply:I do this all the time. I am including the link I used to learn how to cut my kitties nails. I learned from my dad also, and he has been cutting our cats nails with regular clippers all of their lives. Just be extremely careful. I have my fiancee hold our kitty so that only his front paws stick out, and then I very slowly grab each claw and clip it. In the website I sent you will be able to see something called the Quick. I never clip anywhere close to here, I only clip to the point where I think his nails are blunt enough that he cannot hurt anything anymore. Also, when you are doing this to the kitty he will probably cry and act like you are killing him. Do not give into this, once it is over he will appreciate how short his nails are; i have seen some cats that dont ever get clipped and they get caught in rugs, which from observation hurts these cats. just take it slow, some days I have to do a claw at a time if my kitty gets upset. eventually, they will get used to it. And one thing I try to do with my kitty is give him some kind of reward after he gets his nails clipped, so that he knows that clipping isnt such a bad thing. Hope this helps!
Reply:I use regular nail clippers on my cat. You just have to be very mindful that you do not cut them into the "quick"- when the blood flow comes out into the cats claw. The lighter the color of the nail, the easier it is to see. Cutting into the quick is very painful for the cat and the nail will bleed for quite some time. If you cat tries to fight you while you are trimming, try wrapping them tightly in a towel with only one paw and their head out. Good Luck.
Reply:I wouldn't recommend that because it seems that human nail clippers wouldn't cut them straight. Go to the pet store and get a $5 pair of cat nail clippers. Also, for the bad behavior, get a $1 spray water bottle from Wal Mart or Target and when the cat acts badly, spray him. If our cats see the water bottle they immediately stop what they are doing cause they don't like to be sprayed.
Reply:Human nail clippers are not recommended to trim your kitty's nails as they have a tendency to split the nail into slivers. The best clippers to use are the regular cat clippers that have a guard on them so you don't go into the quick. I have 13 cats and do mine all the time. Not all of them hold still, so I either do it while they are taking their naps or have my husband hold them. The main thing to remember is to be very gentle with them and talk soothing to them the whole time. The reason the cat/kitten squirms around so much is 1. they do not like their paws being touched and 2. they are tickleish (just like us). The main thing to remember in dealing with animals is to talk soothing to them. NEVER hit an animal - they will associate you with pain and not trust you, plus real damage could be done (broken bones, punctures, internal bruising/bleeding)especially if the infliction was done in anger. Tap the nose a couple of times gently, but firmly, and say "No" or "bad kitty".
Reply:I trim my cat's claws with my fingernail trimmers (she doesn't go outdoors, so there's no need for her to have sharp claws).





The trick is to hold the clippers vertically instead of horizontally (like you would with your nails) because a cat's claw is narrow, and cutting the claw in the direction it is widest can hurt them. If you stay well below the quicks and just take off the sharp hooks, your cat will not experience any pain or discomfort.





Use only VERY SHARP nail trimmers, and clip with a firm, quick motion. Any splintering of the nail is caused by the claw shedding its outer layer, there is a new nail underneath. Just peel away any splinters and you will see fresh new nail underneath.
Reply:I used baby clippers for the kitten and adult for the older 2 cats. Be careful when you cut. I have never bled my cats doing it this way. Also, please don't spank use a spray bottle and a loud, firm "NO!". If he bites you don't whip your hand away from him but stick your finger or hand a little further into his mouth GENTLY w/ a "NO". By doing this you will teach him to move away from your hand, take the fun out of biting you %26amp; he won't like the gag reflex. You may end up w/ more scratches for a while but he will catch on and it will be worth it. This has worked for me in dog training, w/ my cats at home and also as a keeper at a zoo.
