Has anyone filed their own tooth before?

I chipped my tooth last night and I can't get to the dentist right away. He said it is possible to file it with a nail file to smooth it out but it takes a while. Has anyone ever done that before? Does it hurt? What kind of nail file should I use?

Has anyone filed their own tooth before?
You could try using a course nail file it doesn't hurt it just takes some time to get it smooth or you could go to the drug store and get some temporary filling material or wax to cover up the broken area until you can get into the dentist.
Reply:I tried that, but it ended up hurting, and seemed like it would take hours.... try maybe a metal nail file....

Best wishes!
Reply:Try a Dremel or rotary hand tool with 25,000 rpm with a light hand. The heat it generates will hurt. So use some Ambesol or Oragel you can get at the drug store.
Reply:no!
Reply:I have done it before and a metal nail file is the way to go.

Just dont go too fast or the heat will burn your gums like no other.

Good luck!
Reply:No, I've never done that, or heard of anyone doing this.
Reply:A Dremel tool, are you nuts? Should you slip, you'll be spending a few hours in the Emergency room. Seriously, use a simple, non-metal emery board.
Reply:You could go to the drug store and get some temp filling material to put over the rough edge. I never heard of using a nail file.
Reply:Unless its just plain cutting you up and you're bleeding everywhere I'd just leave it!. Maybe your dentist could use that bit of tooth to stick filling to.
