What do dentists do for a chipped tooth?

My tooth chipped as I was chewing a nail. It was one of my bottom incisors. Chipped off the back of the tooth. Not really visable--as it's on the back of the tooth. I was actually surprised as it took little force and I've always thought I have healthy teeth (24 y.o., never had a cavity, always--until recently since dental insurance dropped--go to dentists)

What do dentists do for a chipped tooth?
if you chip your tooth, all they do is put a white cap on it. I chipped off the top part of my tooth when i was younger, and now i have a white cap on it, where you can't ever tell it was chipped, and it has never come off and had to be replaced.
Reply:they usually file it down and if necessary put a cap on it. However, if it doesn't bother you or chewing they might just leave it without one.
Reply:They just fill in the chipped spot with this kind of longlasting stuff, i broke my front permant tooth once and they filled it in and everything was fine.
Reply:I chipped my front 2 teeth while riding a scooter they can cap the tooth and it is pretty much pain free and not really noticable!
Reply:thye just fill it in with some kind of artificial thing or since its in the back, they file it all down to make the surface even
Reply:Henry, why were you chewing a nail? What's up with that? If it's the back of the incisor, your dentist might not do anything about it. Or s/he might pain over it with an enamel tooth paint, or might actually fill it, depending on how bad the chip was.
Reply:they yank it out!!
Reply:they put in veneers(or however you spell it). My friend chipped a big chunk of her tooth on concreate and they gave her a fake tooth in place of the chipped half. If it's a little chip at the bottom of you tooth they usually just grind it so its level again.
Reply:They put a cap or crown on it.
Reply:if it is a small chip......give it time...... sometimes it smoothes out on its own and no need for any filling........is it sensitive?..if it bothers you or aches go to the dentist...otherwise im sure its fine.....if its sharp it will smooth out a bit in a few weeks
Reply:not much they shave it smooth if it bothering you.
Reply:depends on how bad it's chipped, but they can repair it in any case. I had one repaired with that white filling material they use. I've heard they use caps in bad cases though
Reply:sorry to hear that you have to have some dental work, yick! I had a bike accident years ago, basically what they did was clean the area then what my dentist did was take some kind of film that they literally "melt" or heat until bonded to your tooth. Once they have built it up enough, they go sand and polish it down to a normal size. There is really no need for anestesia either.
Reply:That's usually a cavity so go get checked and maybe it can be filled or capped please don't wait until it starts bothering you like I did I ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks and 6weeks of treatment for an infected tooth I developed osteomalitis the infection spreaded from my tooth to my jaw bone.
Reply:If it's not serious, he will grind it down some to make it smooth, instead of possibly cutting your tongue at some point. If, however, the chip is actually a vertical split, and has endangered the health of the tooth, he may fill it in using a composite filling or even cap it. Only a dentist would know if there's anything to be concerned about, and what he or she would do, after looking at the tooth. If it's sensitive to hot or cold or air - breathe in through your open mouth, make an appointment sooner vs. later.
Reply:It depends if the tooth hurts you or not, or is sensitive to hot or cold liquids..If it hurts or is sensitive, then the break may be close to a nerve...an x-ray could show the extent of the break. If the break is not close to a nerve, you could probably just get bonding to rebuild the tooth. If it is close to a nerve, it may require a root canal and a crown to cover the tooth.
Reply:I chipped my front tooth as a kid and I finally had it fixed about 5 years ago. I was so pleased that the proceedure was so easy and basically painless! The dentist just "painted" some bonding on it. I had a brand new smile and a new self confidence.

I am careful not to chew or bite things off with it....it's my top front tooth....because I am afraid the bonding might come off as it did one time about a year after I had it done. But it has been fine for four years now after the dentist redid it.
Reply:a crown or a veneer. most dentist offer free consultations.
Reply:For an adult tooth, depending on just how badly you chipped your tooth, the dentist might put a filling in it; if a nerve is exposed, your dentist may need to do a root canal and then cover the tooth with a crown; or if a nerve isn't exposed, then the dentist might simply put a crown on it. I have chipped a few of my teeth in the past and I made an dental appointment asap. Your dentist needs to look at the tooth and then decide if it is safe to just put in a filling or put a crown on it. I would certainly have the tooth checked out to see just how much damage you actually did or you may wake up one Friday night hurting really badly. Then you'll probably wish that you had taken the time to have it checked out rather than just leaving it alone and then having to suffer until you can get a dentist appointment. It's always better to be safe than sorry and possibly lose that tooth.
Reply:They usually place bonding or veneers on the chipped tooth.
Reply:Why were you chewing a nail...? They can make a crown for it.
Reply:If it is a small chip they just bond it. It is basically a filling type of material. They will file your tooth slightly and then add the bonding material to it, and then put a light to it to set it and dry it. No biggy. I have it done all the time to my front 2 teeth because they break. Eventually when you get older and teeth start to break down they usually like to crown them, but until then no worries. It is important to have the tooth fixed though because once it breaks it leaves it fragile for more tooth to fall off and then cavities can set in easier.

This is coming from a person that has had almost every kind of procedure done on her teeth and I am 38 years old.
