In the movie Saving Private Ryan, why did they have to fight that last terrible battle?

They were going to blow up the bridge anyway, so why did they have to fight the Germans tooth and nail before blowing it? If they didn't want the Germans to take the bridge, why not just blow it up and go home? Hope someone can answer this for me because I'm having a hard time figuring out why all those guys had to die.

They actually wanted to save the bridge for the Allied forces to use. Blowing the bridge was a last resort when the Germans almost overran them. They couldn't let the Germans have such an easy river crossing.
