Wouldn't gay marriage STRENGTHEN the institution of marriage?

NOT lessen it?

i mean, come on, all these people fighting tooth and nail just to show their love and commitment for one another.

THAT's what marriage should be about.

Wouldn't gay marriage STRENGTHEN the institution of marriage?
As a gay man, whether or not I marry my partner has no bearing whatsoever on the heterosexuals who are married next door. All the problems with marriage, and there are many, have been caused by heterosexuals. We gay Americans have had nothing to do with the rampant divorce rate, adultery, spousal abuse, child abuse, financial problems, inequalities, etc. which are found in unsuccessful heterosexual marriages. Those problems can only be fixed by the two people in the marriage.

As far as fighting tooth and nail just to show our love and commmitment for one another, that is exactly what marriage is about. However, I'd expect that gay people will do no better or worse than our heterosexual brothers and sisters have done once we are allowed to marry. The same issues which plague heterosexual marriage will also one day plague ours and that is why we should look for ways to STRENGTHEN the institution of marriage not ways to exclude others from it.
Reply:I agree
Reply:I found an icon that once said marriage is not about race, religion, disability, age, or color. Marriage is about love. I liked that, and I still do. I think that it is a very true statement. I think we need to back off the gays and focus more on the message of marriage : Love.
Reply:I agree.
Reply:no..it is a mockery
Reply:What drives me nuts is that some people position themselves as "pro-marriage", meaning that they are against gay marriage.

One of the stupidest contradictions I've ever seen.
Reply:The problem with these kinds of questions is the fact that the only thing saying gay is wrong is the bible. So if you don't believe in the bible then you shouldn't care. and if you do then it's wrong. It's pretty black and white to me. It says word for word in the bible that gay's are not approved in gods eyes. But if you don't believe the bible then you shouldn't care.
Reply:agree!
Reply:That's actually makes a lot of sense. Nice use of logic.
Reply:yes well some bigots don't see it that way
Reply:The institution of marriage would not be strengthened by gay marriage.
Reply:Otherwise, people must assume marriage is strengthened by episodes like Britney's Vegas experiment - over in 24 hours. But totally heterosexual, so that's all right then.
Reply:you'd think so, but there are these hypocristians who choose to spread hatred instead of embrace love - in whatever form. I personally agree that gay marriage should be allowed and would most definitely strengthen the institution of marriage. ONE LOVE. I think it is a shame that people have to fight so hard just to show genuine love.
Reply:The divorce lawyer lobby is pushing hard for gay marriage. Wonder why? May be looking to expand their customer base?
Reply:do you really want to be in an institution anyway?
Reply:NO NO NO!! It lessens it. How? I have no idea but I have been told it lessens the institution of marriage. What's next? Cats and dogs marrying each other?
Reply:It most certainly would, also most gay marriages would outlast most straight ones. Maybe that's what so many straight people are so afraid of.
Reply:I don't know. I kinda think that Christians would see gay marriage as 'strengthening' marriage in the same way that we would see incorporating creationism as 'bolstering' science. Quantity doesn't always trump quality.

Personally, I think that providing gay couples with eligibility for the same benefits that straight couples get from marriage would be a great step for our country. I just don't think this argument would fly with anyone who didn't share this opinion.
Reply:i don't think that is their motive. if u feel that way about ur significant other, u shouldn't need a piece of paper to prove it. to get married u either have to do it in a church (which believes it's wrong) or do it in front of a judge ( who makes people swear on the bible b4 giving a testimony) so idk, there is where the religion points come in, but in all reality, u shouldn't need anyone else to recognize ur love except for u and ur partner.
Reply:no
Reply:So give it different name then. " Gayrriage" or something like that.
Reply:But God says it's wrong, and us Christians have to hate SOME group of people who haven't liberated themselves yet!
Reply:A happy and carefree marriage will help strengthen the marriage

BUT,

a homosexual marriage always weakens the institute of marriage; not to mention who is a boy and who is a girl.
Reply:If you are interested, here is an article by a self describe civil libertarian that gives some convincing arguments from an economic standpoint that same sex marriage might ruin the institution of marriage (it is too long to post here0. he also argues the other side of the coin, i believe, so make up your own mind:
Reply:First, Marriage is only between a man and a woman! Now would the acceptance of homosexual relationships help the institution of marriage. Now you answer that! Should there be more tolerance to the relationships of homosexuals, Yes but not as married couples.
