Would atheists volunteer to go to schools and teach kids to recognize the tricks used by religious people?

…tricks used by religious people to manipulate children into their religion?

Because atheism is not really something that can be taught, I don’t think it’s possible for someone to make someone else an atheist. All atheists can do is to remove the shadow of religious deceit from the minds of children. This can be achieved with a few simple truths like how all religions claim that only their beliefs are true and all the others are false but there is the same distinct lack of evidence for all religious beliefs. Atheists can show children how religious people will try to emotionally manipulate them into believing what they are told is truth and how their natural skepticism is beaten down with fabricated stories designed to inspire fear and guilt.

I’m sure the benefits of this would be quickly observed but do you think any atheists would think the effort is worth it? I mean, religious people would fight tooth and nail to keep their children ignorant of these simple truths.

Would atheists volunteer to go to schools and teach kids to recognize the tricks used by religious people?
Actually, many do. Not atheism per se, which despite the sillyarsed claims of others is NOT a belief but a lack thereof (funny how no one talks of a lack of belief in Harry Potter or the Easter Bunny as a belief, isn't it?)

But anyway, many atheists teach, both professionally and as volunteers, logic and critical thinking courses - the end result of which, if applied to religion's claims, is atheism. As well, several atheists I know have volunteered to appear at schools in comparative religion classes as guest speakers.

So, yes would be the answer.
Reply:I'm sure there are many who would be willing to, but that doesn't make it right.

Just like it wouldn't be right, in my opinion, for any given religious group to send people to a public school to teach the religion.
Reply:Atheism can be "taught" or "learned" since it is a belief. But I think atheists have better things to do.
Reply:that's silly

and that's a parents job anyway!
Reply:Yeah, anyone who argues against an atheist is a complete liar and hates the truth. Gotcha.

When you write rhetoric slamming all religious people, you might want to be a little less sweeping in your statements. That way you can trick more people.
Reply:if religion is banned in schools then i feel atheism should be as well. its only fair.
Reply:The schools and government would never allow it. Religion is a great tool to pacify the masses, teach them respect and loyalty to authority, what purpose would education system and the government have in helping atheists do that.

For the greater good of teaching thruth, lol, yeah right, people have been punished for thousands of years for that.

Good thought though.
Reply:An attempt to teach kids critical thinking skills would be a great and noble thing to do, I'd certainly volunteer.
Reply:Freedom of religion would prevent them from doing that. But I see that you think it's supposed to be freedom from religion. You are entitled to your opinion, but not entitled to force it on others. Isn't that what atheists accuse religious people of doing?
Reply:First, there's a flaw in your logic, but it's another trick. Wicca says that all good religions are right, but this is another trick for dragging in the ones who are undecided but want to be "better safe than sorry."

Personaly, as an atheist, I don't give a rat's patoot wether I am seen as a bad guy. I'd be willing to go to any school that would have me and simply speak logicly on the level of the children, but I would let them decide. Chose any religion, I will tell you about it, the tricks it uses, and let you decide, any religion in the world, or atheism.
Reply:my question is why would you even bother with trying to destroy an other's faith?

As a former agnostic I know that faith is beyound reason, however faith is only a problem when it is misused as a motivation for evil. If it motivates some one to do good for those around them, then be happy some one is helping or doing some thing beautiful.
Reply:I'd take that job...where can I sign up???
Reply:No..... It's not my place. That's the parent's job!
Reply:Boy it would be neat if they would come here to do that, I bet you, there would be a few less Democrats voting in the upcoming elect. Why don't you all give it a try here first? OK?
Reply:I have often thought that a basic course in magician's tricks and the arts of deception might be a good start. It would be a good fit with teaching critical thinking skills.

The kids would end up with the practical experience instead of just being told about how hoodwinking works.

Maybe something could work out through the Randi Foundation.

I think the idea of teaching how to be sceptical of outrageous claims would be a benefit to the county, but it would run contrary to the interests of the people in power who desire easily lead populations.
Reply:I would be more concerned about the cattle mentality of people blindly following the media. The most destructive example of manipulating tricks is done in politics and the power of the media to divert the attention.
Reply:WHAT?!

Funny but my friend was raised atheist and guess what? He's an atheist!!!

For a group that claims intellectual superiority, I just can't believe some of the things that come out on this forum.

See I can say that atheists close off a very vital portion of human existance that would be akin to locking children in a closet......just like you can say that religious deceive children.

As far as "natural skepticism" goes......it shows that you don't have children. Children are naturally trusting and believe what they are told. It's only after dealing with HUMANS that distrust and skepticism roots in.

Finally...I must address this yet again....."This can be achieved with a few simple truths like how all religions claim that only their beliefs are true and all the others are false but there is the same distinct lack of evidence for all religious beliefs"

Hey isn't this exactly what you are attempting to do? To claim you are the only belief that is true (no god) and all others are false (religious are manipulative and deceive) without any proof (you can not prove non-existance like I can not prove existance)?
Reply:No. It is none of our business how many heads and arms the god they may worship in the privacy of their homes has, just as long as they keep it out of school science class.
