Why is tradition important?

Okay, so why, deep down, is tradition actually important?

If Congress passed a law that would negate tradition and start from scratch, people would fight it tooth and nail. But what is actually the value of tradition? Why do people value it? Is it not just simply a preset societal pattern of doing something that people invented? What is so special about it?

Why is tradition important?
New traditions are created everyday. People do this with their children all the time. These can include anything from when a Christmas tree is put up, to bedtime rituals. And... it is not limited to children.

Traditions are a way of recognizing what is important to a person or a group of people. It is a way of making meaning in life. When traditions become binding, they must be reinvented to meet the needs of the people concerned. Reinvent!
Reply:Good question.

My take is this:

Life comes at us with so many variables every day, it helps to keep the mind straight if we have traditions to keep at least parts of our day formatted in a consistant manner. The years are easier to mark emotionally as we celebrate a "New Year", a Spring fest, a Summer holiday, a Fall tradition and an end of year tradition, whatever it may be.

edit: As for "belonging" and "knowing where you come from", I don't need rituals for that.
Reply:it gives you a sense of identity, you can reflect where you come from and what community you are part of.
Reply:Tradition is our route cause for our living
Reply:roots and a sense of beloning. knowing where you come from and keeping it going.
Reply:If tradition is something people invented, then it is important because a sense of pride exists in its invention. It's also a product of being "stuck in our ways." Isn't it true that people rebell against change? At least the older generation. And it is the older generation in power, no? Tradition is familiar. So, tradition stays. At least for a while.
Reply:my granny passed many trditions on to me an without these my children would not know what life used to be like. thats why the world is like it is today! many people ignore traditions!
Reply:everything!
Reply:because it gives us a sense of belonging
Reply:Yes, tradition is important. It gives you something to look forward to.
