Where did 'Tooth and Nail' originate from?

Exactly what does it mean?

Where did 'Tooth and Nail' originate from?
"tooth and nail"

To fight violently is to fight "tooth and nail," with every "tooth" and every "nail." Example: "That woman fought tooth and nail during the war to protect her children." Animals sometimes fight violently with every tooth (in their mouth) and every nail (on their claws). Example: "That cat is terrified (very afraid) of cars; try to get him in a car and he'll fight you tooth and nail." To fight "tooth and nail" is to fight completely and with everything you have. Note: "Tooth" and "nail" are both singular in "tooth and nail." Example: "That was a tough match; they fought us tooth and nail!"
Reply:Fighting tooth and nail.... like biting and scratching. Best wishes
Reply:it's a primitive reference........

when having teeth and nails ( and using them ) meant survival

Robert Hendrickson, Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins, 2nd edition (New York: Facts on File, 2004), p. 728:

tooth and nail. The Latin equivalent for this ancient phrase was toto corpore atque omnibus ungulis, "with all the body and every nail." The French have a similar saying, too: bec et ongles, "beak and talons." All mean the same: to fight with tooth and nails, biting and scratching, with weapons, with all the powers at one's command. Figurative use of the expression in England brings us back to the early 16th century, and it was listed as a proverb then.

The Latin phrase occurs at Cicero, Tusculan Disputations 2.24.56 (toto corpore atque omnibus ungulis, ut dicitur, contentioni vocis adserviunt), where the ut dicitur shows that it was proverbial in his day.

I have not seen James Rogers, The Dictionary of Cliches (New York: Ballantine Books, 1985), but I find the following entry quoted on the WWW:

FIGHTING TOOTH AND NAIL - Fight fiercely, with all one's resources; cling tenaciously. A Latin proverb expressed this thought as 'dentibus et vnguibus.' In the sense of fighting, it appeared in English in 1562 in Ninian Winget's 'Certain Tractates': 'Contending with tuith and nail (as is the prouverb).' In the sense of holding fast, it is equally old, as in Erasmus' 'Enchiridion Militis Christiani' (1533): 'Take and holde this toth and nayle, that to be honour onely which springeth of true virtue.'

The Latin original of Erasmus' Enchiridion (9.5) does not use the tooth and nail phrase:

hoc mordicus teneto solum eum honorem esse, qui a vera virtute proficiscitur.

It's possible to find ancient equivalents closer to the modern English tooth and nail, e.g.

Lucretius 5.1284:

Ancient weapons were hands, nails, and teeth.

arma antiqua manus ungues dentesque fuerunt.

Lucian, Dialogues of the Dead 11.4:

But gold they would guard with teeth and nails and any other way.

Is Tooth and Nail Records an all Christian label?

It is supposed to be, but I know that there are Christian bands who are 'not-so-Christian' any more. They only claim to be Christian

Tooth and Nail SAT study guide - please help!!?

Has anyone read this book? I have a final on it due tomorrow. I got all of the vocabulary words down, i just need help with the actual reading and comprehension part. What main events w/ some detail that happened in the whole book ? I do not have enough time to finish all of those pages tomorrow. Could someone please tell me a quick summary of the book, that i could still get at least an A on using the information from the summary? Please help! And no, I have not been procrastinating, just have been too busy with other homework to deal with this, just in case you were wondering...

Tooth and Nail SAT study guide - please help!!?
It's not that great of a book. I got 2 perfect scores in math and reading, but my writing score was only 720, for a total of 2320. I only read this SAT guide, and that is how I got such high scores:

I recommend this guide to anyone seeking to get a higher score to get into a first choice college.

You are much better off calling them and asking to visit. Tooth and Nail's phone number is (206) 691-9831

The office is located at 3522 W Government Way

Seattle, WA 98199, but they get their snail mail at this P. O. Box address:

Tooth %26amp; Nail Records

P.O. Box 12698

Seattle, WA 98111

If you absolutely want to send an e-mail (and as I said, I don't recommend it, because e-mail is the least likely way to get their attention), you can write to the general e-mail address: webmaster@toothandnail.net

Hope this helps. Good luck!!

Nail glue on tooth?

haha i know it sounds weird and i dont know how it got there but i have nail glue on my teeth and it wont brush off its more of super glue kind but is it permanant on my teeth? am i gonna feel it everytime i brush my tongue infront of my teeth?

Nail glue on tooth?
It may chip off on its own, but if not point it out to your dentist or hygienist and we can scale (clean) it off the surface. If it can't be removed the dentist can always smooth it down with a sanding disc. Hope that helps!

JAMRDH - a dental hygienist
Reply:It's not permanent. It will wear off in a few days.
Reply:How long has it been on there? I had the same thing happen to me. I kinda scratched it with my nail because it annoyed me and it was gone by the end of the day.
Reply:It will wear awway! No worries, and if it doesnt the dentist can polish it off!

My brother is killing me with a mill deck that has Glimpse the Unthinkable vs tooth and nail how can i stop it

Basically i want to be able to play my tooth mono green without having to add blue for mana leaks and such.. We play for fun so any card suggestions/recomendations from mtg would be greatly appreciated = )

My brother is killing me with a mill deck that has Glimpse the Unthinkable vs tooth and nail how can i stop it
Gaea's Blessing http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/index.as... . If he mills you and there is a blessing in there you get all your graveyard back. It will fit right in a mono green deck. Heck I put it in a mono blue deck with Dreamborn Muses. I never had to worry about casting the blessings or milling myself out of cards. LMK what you think.
Reply:look online to find a deck that can beat it cant think of any cards srry

but i hope some of this helps

elizabeth

p.s. i know youll beat your brother for fun eveavnlly i beaten my brother for fun before 2 times i did
Reply:BIG has it. You put 4 gaeas blessings in your deck and you brother won't even think about playing the glimpses. (get it, unthinkable)
Reply:Primal Command is great for this situation. http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDeta... One of the options is to shuffle your graveyard back into your library. If you're playing Tooth and Nail you should be getting alot of mana out quick. What mana fixing do you have? Chrome Mox and a Forest can give you a turn 1 Sylvan Scrying or Sakura-Tribe Elder and the increased speed will make a big difference in how you deal with mill. Extraplanar Lens is also good.

Nail polish as theatrical tooth enamel...?

I want to black out my two front teeth for Halloween. Is it safe for my teeth to use black nail polish, or is there some special formula that is different in the "real" costume fake tooth enamel?

I realize this is silly, but so am I. Thank you for all serious and non-demeaning answers.

Nail polish as theatrical tooth enamel...?
not only would it taste terrible but it's dangerous!!

the fumes from the nail polish should not be inhaled (considering your mouth is so close to your throat!)

also.. even if you keep your mouth open until the polish dries... some of it (in liquid form or as little flakes) will end up going down your throat which is NOT healthy! there are so many chemicals in nail polish..

DEFINITLY just go by the formula that is MADE to be put in the mouth!

p.s. this is not a stupid question... it's kind of creative you would think to use nail polish = ]
Reply:Im sure it would taste awful and could stain your real teeth. Ive seen the tooth black out stuff and it was only 2.99 at PartyCity.

Id stick with the items that are meant to be in your mouth.

My atheist brother ate my PB&J sandwich. Should I replace his CDs with the Tooth & Nail library?

tell him that you prayed and god told you that he wanted him to have the pb%26amp;j sandwich (this should cause him to hesitate just enough to think about a rebuttal and right when he takes a breathe to spew a retort) chop him in the throat just hard enough to make his teeth clack ,,,, he may reply what did you do that for or something to that effect, and your answer is god said he wanted you to have my sandwich but i didn't figuire you'd ask him what to do about the throat chop

My atheist brother ate my PB%26amp;J sandwich. Should I replace his CDs with the Tooth %26amp; Nail library?
HAHAHAHA! That would be pure evil, dude!
Reply:Make another sandwhich, but put something in it.....
Reply:I don't get it. :(
Reply:Hehe...that would be very funny! Hey maybe if you did that would give him the way to God!
Reply:have bible study at his house
Reply:He ate a sandwich it's no big deal. You can replace his CD's with good Christian music CD's.
Reply:no
Reply:A bigger surprise might be the entire Mariah Carey Collection! LMAO!
